Colleen M. Sargent, Artist

Welcome!     Yes, I AM AN ARTIST!

I am an artist who paints.  I have been creative my whole life, but have taken many paths away from living creatively.  I am now 45 and am telling the world (and the universe) that I am an artist.   You can tell people too, if you want.  I paint on canvas and ceramic tiles and I adore bright colors and interesting, unexpected textures--you will see both in my work.  My work is very bold, and mostly abstract--which is not what I expected to be creating when I began.  My art is about me and my journey.

My favorite tools are acrylic paint, oil sticks and ink.  However, I also make use of soft pastels, colored pencils, charcoal, stencils, rollers, and just about anything else I find that might make an interesting impression or texture. All of my work is original and although you may see similar color palettes and subject matter, my techniques do not easily allow for reproduction.   I do accept commissions, however, and would gladly give it a go.

My artwork on canvas is created with acrylic paint and gel mediums, and usually include soft pastel, colored pencil, oil stick and/or charcoal as well.  My canvas paintings tend to have a minimum of 3 or 4 layers of paint. The layers of my paintings create a depth that give them character and bring them to life.  Some layers are covered completely through my process and others peek through and are seen.  Every layer is important, seen or not—as it becomes part of the final piece.  You know the saying about how everything you have done in your life has brought you to this moment?  In my paintings, even those layers only seen by me were important in getting to the finished product.  I see it as the same thing.  Although I create paintings on canvas of all sizes, I adore nothing more than a HUGE, fresh canvas, full of potential with space to play and experiment.

The ceramic tiles I create are painted with acrylic based alcohol inks.  Alcohol inks, by nature, are hard to control.  They flow, creep and bleed together.  Rather than trying to harness their qualities, I usually allow the personality of the ink to create beauty through trial and error. I regularly make use of water, isopropyl alcohol and gravity as tools in these paintings.  I also, occasionally, add details with acrylic markers.  I have fallen in love with the brightness of the ink colors, and the complexity of the instrument.  Oh, and I adore the process.

I would love for you to love my art and it is my hope that my work touches you in some way.  Maybe the color, the texture, or the composition.  Maybe something about a piece will stir an emotion or brighten your day.  Or maybe you will see something within the abstract that takes on a familiar shape.  From the bottom of my heart, thank you for spending this time with me and my work.
